Pete Sampras has won 7 from 1993 to 2000, only missing 1996 where he lost in the quarterfinals to Richard Krajicek. Bjorn Borg won 5 consecutive titles from 1976-1980. Novak Djokovic has four with his first in 2011 and his latest in 2018.
The Australasian Championships were first held in 1905 in Melbourne, Australia, including a Men's Singles and Doubles competition. It became a major championship in 1924 and became known as the Australian Open in 1969 when professionals were admitted, one year later than the other three Grand Slam tournaments.
James Van Alen introduced the tie-breaker in 1965 as a way of speeding up matches. The US Open started using sudden-death scoring in 1970 and Wimbledon the tie-break the following year. The Australian and French Opens use a tie-breaker in the final set of doubles matches but not singles. The US Open is the only major tournament where the tie-break is used for singles and doubles for every set.
